Unheard letters: What long-term absence really sounds like

In this session, we open the floor to the people whose stories rarely make it into the spotlight: individuals navigating long-term sickness absence. Inspired by the intimacy of live letter readings, we will read three anonymous submissions that reveal the emotional, practical, and deeply human realities behind extended absence: stories told to our Claims Managers daily, yet HR leaders seldom get to hear directly despite being at the heart of their work. In the second half, we moderate a thoughtful panel with our head of people and claims experts to explore what these perspectives mean for employers, how mental health is reshaping absence management, and how organizations can respond with empathy and clarity. Attendees will leave with a set of guiding questions HR can use to open more supportive conversations with employees, helping them foster trust, navigate uncertainty, and approach long-term absences with confidence and care.
