30 Years of the Gender Equality Act – Where It Still Falls Short

Thirty years after the Swiss Gender Equality Act came into force, much has improved—but far from everything is in order. Corinna Hauri, Legal Secretary and Deputy Director of the Canton of Zurich’s Gender Equality Office, offers insights into her advisory work and highlights where employers and HR departments still fall short today: in cases of sexual harassment (prevention obligations, appropriate initial response, internal procedures), in dealing with pregnancy and maternity (removal of responsibilities, subtle pressure, “taking it easy” as a pretext), as well as in wage inequality, which is often downplayed as simply having been “negotiated better.” We discuss typical stumbling blocks, effective prevention, and how HR can design processes so that fairness, legal compliance, and trust are established before a conflict arises.
